Understanding Tumor Removal Surgeries
Tumor removal surgery, at its core, is a procedure to physically extract a tumor from the body. It’s a primary treatment option for many types of cancer and benign tumors, aiming to eliminate the mass and prevent further spread or complications. The specific approach varies widely depending on the tumor’s location, size, type, and the patient’s overall health.
Who Needs Tumor Removal Surgery?
The need for tumor removal surgery is determined by several factors, primarily the characteristics of the tumor itself. Here’s a breakdown:
- Cancerous Tumors: If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, surgery might be recommended to remove the primary tumor and potentially any affected surrounding tissues or lymph nodes. This is often part of a broader treatment plan that could include chemotherapy, radiation, or other therapies.
- Benign Tumors Causing Symptoms: Even non-cancerous tumors can cause problems if they press on nerves, blood vessels, or organs. Symptoms might include pain, discomfort, hormonal imbalances, or impaired function. In such cases, surgery can alleviate these issues and improve your quality of life.
- Tumors with Risk of Transformation: Some benign tumors have the potential to become cancerous over time. Removing these proactively can eliminate that risk.
- Diagnostic Purposes: Sometimes, surgery is needed to obtain a tissue sample for accurate diagnosis. This is known as a biopsy, and it helps determine the nature of the tumor and guide further treatment decisions.
How is Tumor Removal Surgery Performed?
The “how” of tumor removal surgery is highly variable, depending on the factors I mentioned earlier. Here are some general approaches:
- Conventional Open Surgery: This involves making a larger incision to directly access the tumor. It allows for a wide field of view and is often necessary for large or complex tumors.
- Minimally Invasive Surgery: This involves making small incisions and using specialized instruments (laparoscope, robotic arms) to visualize and remove the tumor. It offers several advantages, including less pain, smaller scars, and faster recovery.
- Image-Guided Surgery: This utilizes real-time imaging (MRI, CT scans) during surgery to precisely locate the tumor and ensure complete removal, especially for tumors in delicate or hard-to-reach areas.
- Specialized Techniques: Depending on the tumor type, we may use specialized techniques like:
- Mohs surgery for skin cancer
- Cryosurgery (freezing) for certain tumors
- Laser surgery
When is the Right Time for Surgery?
The timing of tumor removal surgery is crucial and depends on several factors:
- Diagnosis and Staging: A prompt and accurate diagnosis is essential. Staging helps determine the extent of the tumor and whether it has spread.
- Overall Health: Your general health and fitness for surgery are carefully evaluated.
- Neoadjuvant Therapy: In some cases, chemotherapy or radiation might be given before surgery (neoadjuvant therapy) to shrink the tumor and make it easier to remove.
- Patient Preference: We value your input and involve you in the decision-making process.

I was diagnosed with Cancer endometrium...
I was diagnosed with Cancer endometrium in July 2018. Dr Sujata Mittal did wonderful surgery and at the same time taught me to be disease free. I weighed 94 kg before surgery and had diabetes, hypertension, asthma and hypothyroidism. Her nutritional program helped me in reducing 10 kg before surgery. Postoperatively, I reduced another 14 kg. I now understand that this will help in reducing the chances of recurrence. I am also without anti diabetic drugs and hypothyroid drugs. My dosage of hypertensive medications are reduced considerably. I am able to step up and step down from stairs too.
