Ever felt a lump that made you anxious? Or perhaps you’re navigating the complexities of cancer treatment? Lymph node dissection (LND) might be a term you’ve encountered. At Famicare Speciality Center, I understand that medical terms can be daunting. That’s why I’m here to break down what LND is, why it’s important, and how our expert team in Rohini ensures the best possible care. Think of this as a friendly guide through a crucial aspect of cancer treatment, delivered with a personal touch and a dash of wit.

What is Lymph Node Dissection?

Lymph node dissection is a surgical procedure where lymph nodes are removed and examined for signs of cancer1. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures that filter lymph fluid, a clear fluid containing immune cells. They are a crucial part of your immune system. When cancer cells break away from a primary tumor, they often travel through the lymphatic system. LND helps determine if the cancer has spread and guides further treatment decisions.

Why is it Important?

  • Staging Cancer: LND helps determine the stage of cancer, indicating how far it has spread.
  • Preventing Spread: Removing affected lymph nodes can prevent further spread of cancer.
  • Treatment Planning: The results of LND influence treatment plans, such as chemotherapy or radiation.

Who Needs Lymph Node Dissection?

LND is typically recommended for individuals diagnosed with cancers that have a high risk of spreading through the lymphatic system. This includes:

  • Breast Cancer: To check for spread to axillary (armpit) lymph nodes.
  • Melanoma: To assess lymph node involvement in melanoma patients.
  • Colon Cancer: To evaluate lymph node involvement and guide treatment.
  • Other Cancers: Such as gastric, esophageal, and gynecological cancers.

If I were in your shoes, I’d want to know exactly why this procedure is being recommended. At Famicare, we ensure you get a clear explanation tailored to your specific situation.

How is Lymph Node Dissection Performed at Famicare?

At Famicare Speciality Center in Rohini, I pride myself on using the most advanced techniques to ensure effective and safe LND procedures. Here’s a detailed look at what you can expect:

  • Pre-operative Evaluation:
    • A thorough assessment of your overall health, medical history, and cancer stage.
    • Imaging tests like CT scans, MRI, or PET scans to map the extent of lymph node involvement.
    • Discussion of potential risks and benefits of the procedure.

  • Surgical Techniques:
    • Open LND: Traditional surgical approach involving a larger incision to access and remove lymph nodes.
    • Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB): A minimally invasive technique where only the first few lymph nodes (sentinel nodes) that cancer cells are likely to spread to are removed. If these nodes are clear, no further dissection is needed.
    • Minimally Invasive LND: Using laparoscopic or robotic techniques to remove lymph nodes through small incisions, resulting in less pain, scarring, and recovery time.

  • Intraoperative Procedures:
      • Careful identification and removal of lymph nodes, ensuring complete resection.
      • Meticulous handling of tissues to minimize damage and complications.
      • Real-time pathological assessment (if available) to check for cancer cells during the surgery.
  • Post-operative Care:
    • Pain management strategies to ensure comfort.
    • Wound care instructions to prevent infection.
    • Physical therapy to restore range of motion and function.
    • Close monitoring for complications like lymphedema.

When is the Best Time for Lymph Node Dissection?

The timing of LND depends on several factors, including the type and stage of cancer. Generally:

  • Early-Stage Cancer: LND may be performed at the same time as the primary tumor removal.

Advanced Cancer: LND might be done before or after other treatments like chemotherapy or radiation.

I was diagnosed with Cancer endometrium...

I was diagnosed with Cancer endometrium in July 2018. Dr Sujata Mittal did wonderful surgery and at the same time taught me to be disease free. I weighed 94 kg before surgery and had diabetes, hypertension, asthma and hypothyroidism. Her nutritional program helped me in reducing 10 kg before surgery. Postoperatively, I reduced another 14 kg. I now understand that this will help in reducing the chances of recurrence. I am also without anti diabetic drugs and hypothyroid drugs. My dosage of hypertensive medications are reduced considerably. I am able to step up and step down from stairs too.
