Facing a breast cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming. At Famicare Speciality Center, I understand this and am here to guide you through every step. Choosing the right surgical approach is a critical decision. Mastectomy and lumpectomy are two primary surgical options for treating breast cancer. This comprehensive guide aims to provide clear, accessible information about these procedures, specifically tailored for patients in Rohini and the Delhi-NCR region. I believe that with the right information and support, you can make informed choices about your treatment journey
Understanding Mastectomy
What is a Mastectomy?
A mastectomy involves the surgical removal of the entire breast. This procedure is often recommended for patients with:
- Large tumors
- Multiple tumors in the same breast
- Tumors that have spread extensively
- A high risk of recurrence
- Preference for a more definitive surgical approach
There are several types of mastectomies:
- Simple or Total Mastectomy: Removal of the entire breast tissue, nipple, and areola.
- Modified Radical Mastectomy: Removal of the entire breast, nipple, areola, and some underarm lymph nodes.
- Skin-Sparing Mastectomy: Removal of breast tissue while preserving the skin envelope for potential breast reconstruction.
- Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy: Removal of breast tissue while preserving both the skin and nipple.
Why Choose a Mastectomy?
A mastectomy might be recommended in situations where a lumpectomy isn’t sufficient to remove all cancerous tissue or when the cancer is widespread within the breast1. It can also be a preferred option for individuals with a genetic predisposition to breast cancer or those who want to minimize the risk of recurrence.
How is a Mastectomy Performed?
The procedure involves making an incision around the breast, removing the breast tissue, and, in some cases, removing nearby lymph nodes. The surgeon then closes the incision with sutures. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and the duration can vary depending on the extent of the surgery1.
When is the Right Time for a Mastectomy?
The decision to undergo a mastectomy is made after careful evaluation of your individual circumstances, including the stage and characteristics of the cancer, your overall health, and your personal preferences. I work closely with each patient to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
Exploring Lumpectomy
What is a Lumpectomy?
A lumpectomy, also known as breast-conserving surgery, involves the removal of the tumor and a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue1. This approach aims to preserve as much of the natural breast as possible.
Who is a Good Candidate for Lumpectomy?
Lumpectomy is typically suitable for patients with:
- Small, localized tumors
- Tumors that can be completely removed with clear margins
- A desire to preserve the breast
Why Opt for a Lumpectomy?
The primary advantage of a lumpectomy is that it allows you to retain most of your breast tissue. This can have a positive impact on body image and psychological well-being. However, it’s often followed by radiation therapy to ensure any remaining cancer cells are eradicated.
How is a Lumpectomy Performed?
During a lumpectomy, the surgeon makes an incision over the tumor, removes the tumor along with a margin of healthy tissue, and then closes the incision. The removed tissue is then sent to a pathologist to ensure that the margins are clear of cancer cells.
When Should You Consider a Lumpectomy?
If your cancer is detected early and is confined to a small area, a lumpectomy may be a viable option. I carefully assess each case to determine if a lumpectomy is the most effective approach while ensuring optimal cancer control.
Mastectomy vs. Lumpectomy: A Detailed Comparison
To help you better understand the differences between these two procedures, here’s a detailed comparison:
Feature | Mastectomy | Lumpectomy |
Extent of Surgery | Removal of the entire breast | Removal of the tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue |
Breast Preservation | No breast tissue is preserved | Most of the breast tissue is preserved |
Recovery Time | Generally longer due to more extensive surgery | Typically shorter |
Additional Treatment | May require radiation therapy depending on the stage and characteristics of the cancer | Usually followed by radiation therapy |
Body Image | Can have a significant impact; breast reconstruction is an option | Less impact on body image |
Recurrence Risk | Lower risk of local recurrence in the breast, but can still occur in other areas | Slightly higher risk of local recurrence compared to mastectomy |
Ideal Candidates | Large tumors, multiple tumors, high risk of recurrence, or preference for a more definitive surgical approach | Small, localized tumors that can be completely removed with clear margins, and a desire to preserve the breast. |

I was diagnosed with Cancer endometrium...
I was diagnosed with Cancer endometrium in July 2018. Dr Sujata Mittal did wonderful surgery and at the same time taught me to be disease free. I weighed 94 kg before surgery and had diabetes, hypertension, asthma and hypothyroidism. Her nutritional program helped me in reducing 10 kg before surgery. Postoperatively, I reduced another 14 kg. I now understand that this will help in reducing the chances of recurrence. I am also without anti diabetic drugs and hypothyroid drugs. My dosage of hypertensive medications are reduced considerably. I am able to step up and step down from stairs too.
